Undergraduate, graduate and PhD students from all around the world joined us this August for our first secUnity International Summer School 2017 (SISS2k17) at TU Darmstadt organized by the chair Software Business and Information Management. 33 students studying in 13 different countries participated in our one-week program, taking 10 courses, attending several social and cultural events, and meeting various researchers and practitioners from several European countries.

During SISS2k17, we welcomed computer science and business students to promote several topics concerning “Economics of IT Security and Privacy”. Our interdisciplinary approach covered the three main pillars IT Security, Privacy, and Entrepreneurship while introducing the participants also to legal and psychological aspects of these pillars. 13 different speakers – e.g., well-known researchers like Prof. Dr. Krasnova from the University of Potsdam or Dr. Ruilin Zhu from Lancaster University along with practitioners like Volkmar Lotz from SAP SE and Andreas Flach, COO of Avira GmbH & Co. KG – provided theoretical, methodological, and practical insights into topics such as “Information Privacy and Privacy Policy Issues”, “Software and Hardware Security” or “Technological Entrepreneurship and Business Models”. Additionally, all participants were invited to meet researchers like Dr. Roland Rieke who demonstrated various research projects and gadgetry at the research institute Fraunhofer SIT in Darmstadt. The academic program was rounded off with several social and cultural events which enabled students from abroad to immerse themselves in German/Hessian culture and to network and connect among each other.

Due to high satisfaction and recommendation rates, further secUnity summer and winter schools are already in the planning and will be published on the project’s official events website: https://it-security-map.eu/en/events/.

International SISS2k17 scholarship holders were funded by the DAAD with financial support of the Federal Foreign Office while the project secUnity financed by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education provided financial support for our speakers.
